As two years ago, an excellent set of pictures of the NAF air show 2012, held at Kaduna Airport, has been made by Nigeria’s aviation photographer, mr. K. Iwelumo.

I guess we are now the ‘refurbishment kings’ of air forces!. Instead of developing a proper maintainance culture, we let planes, equipment of all sorts and indeed our society rot away and spend billions in trying to sort it out.

150 hours ! What a waste of money. Wasnt there also meant to be a Jaguar simulator in Makurdi?
The C-130 shenanigans highlighted in the wikileaks cables highlight the corruption within us although the prices asked for dont seem too bad for the conditions the planes.
I think only museums would take the MiG 21s off their hands as Google earth pics shows they are not flyable any longer. This is saddening.

The date of the last overhaul of the Jaguar was almost a month before the execution of Wing Co Ben Ekelle et al . He was Strike Force commander. The Babanginda Government then cut off funds for maintenance and even rationed fuel to the airforce’s attack aircraft around that time. This was why when ECOMOG missions started in Sierra Leone started years later, the only operational machines NAF could muster were the Alpha Jets.
