NCAA Director General fired by president Jonathan

Harold Demuren, the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) was fired today by president Goodluck Jonathan with immediate effect.

His Excellency, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has approved the removal of Dr. Harold Olusegun Demuren from Office as the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) with effect from 12th March 2013. This is consequent to a careful consideration of Dr. Demuren’s unsatisfactory response to the numerous concerns of stakeholders in the aviation sector. Mr. President wishes him well in his future endeavours.

Demuren was appointed in 2005 but came under pressure after the Dana Air crash last year, as members of the National Assembly held him responsible and sought his removal. The Minister of Aviation is also reviewing the Civil Aviation Act to strengthen her grip over the NCAA, thereby threatening the agency’s autonomy.

Joyce Nkemakolam, the Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, is appointed acting Director General of the NCAA.

Only 6 comments. Great!. Having had a look at very interesting mix of comments from readers in the general press, it’s impressive that reaction here have conservative. Let this be taken as encouraging sign to get above the weather and channel focus on the the main subject and nitty gritty of avi dev without the usual diversions and distractions the non hardcores out there tend to focus on. Will have to say that things can only get better and they are.

LAF, it’s hard to not feel emotions when a man like Demuren gets consumed by the system. GEJ’s personal touch only reflects the failure of leadership that has bedeviled black Africa. Yank the average Joe off the street, give him the facts, dispassionate, and I’ll bet he’ll vote Demuren and condemn GEJ.

Anonymous, the start-ups will enjoy an easy time if they lean on the right people, for, it was sticking to the rules that got them to hit Demuren in the first place.

And there’s the question of incentive for leadership in this country, if, the sacrifice Demuren endured for the land, can be rewarded in this way…this is no way to encourage potential leaders, if we hope to move this country forward

SMH, they finally managed to get rid of the man who seemed to have done things right. Fingers crossed that his replacement is just as capable and willing to do the right things too.
